'Choices' programme that support Andrea back into work after 20 years, returns on 28th January

Andrea had been a stay-at-home mum for over 20 years, bringing up two girls in her home in Thorpe St Andrew.

However, once her children had grown up, Andrea began to feel her life needed a new purpose.

Her mother had read about Choices, Broadland and South Norfolk Councils’ 10-week course that helps people get back into work, and suggested Andrea gave it a go.

“I was nervous about it to begin with,” she confides, “but Jane and Heather were so welcoming and made us all feel at ease. The sessions were friendly and relaxed, and we had a good laugh too.”

Andrea had previously worked for Jarrolds and undertook a wide range of responsibilities from secretarial duties to laying out photos for calendars.

She said: “I went back to Jarrolds a couple of times to help out after my daughter was born, but felt overwhelmed by the new systems and emails, it all felt so different.”

The experience knocked Andrea’s confidence and she struggled to keep up with the advancing technology in the workplace.

Whilst attending Choices, Andrea received help to re-work her CV to really showcase her skills and strengths. She also completed a beginners’ course in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Just before she completed Choices, Andrea saw a secretarial job at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

She said: “Jane encouraged me to apply and helped me with the application form and Heather gave me interview coaching, which really helped to boost my confidence and calm my nerves.”

Andrea has now been working at the hospital for around 5 months, she said: “I love my new job, it’s been wonderful to feel useful again. I would have never got this far without Choices. It’s given me so much more confidence, I’ve learnt new skills and made new friends. I would definitely recommend it.”

Choices is based at Carrowbreck House in Hellesdon. The next course starts on January 28th and runs every Tuesday morning for 10 weeks.
