The Institute of Revenue, Rating and Valuation (IRRV) has awarded the local authority winners in the IRRV Performance Awards 'Excellence in Non Domestic Rates’ category.

The award celebrates innovation and enterprise in Non Domestic Rates handling, through improved and maintained performance.

The team at Broadland District Council achieve consistently high collection rates by promoting a close working relationship with businesses in the area and understanding the issues they are facing.

Staff contact ratepayers individually to discuss their problems and avoid the need for a summons – this ultimately results in very low levels of enforcement action.

Trudy Mancini-Boyle, Portfolio Holder for Finance at Broadland District Council, said:

“Broadland District Council leads the way in innovative use of technology and delivery of local discounts, including assistance to new businesses to locate in the area or for existing enterprises to expand. Our internal and external relationships enable us to scale-up to add capacity. We also vigorously fight rates avoidance and work with specialist solicitors to achieve positive results in tackling the problem. A dedicated team, combined with the ability to continually challenge how we operate, enables us to provide a consistently excellent Non-Domestic Rates Service and we’re thrilled to have been recognised last night at the IRRV awards.”

Broadland District Council was also a finalist in the Revenues Team of the Year category. The IRRV Performance Awards has ten categories - four for teams and seven for excellence. Winners were announced at a gala dinner in Telford on 10 October.
