A total of 340 runners competed in Broadland District Council’s ninth annual Marriott’s Way 10K race on Sunday 8 October.
The race, which is sponsored by Whitwell and Reepham Station, saw runners gather to beat personal bests, fundraise for charity or to simply give it a go.
Broadland District Council Chairman, Cllr David Ward, started the race at the starting point in Aylsham and presented the winners with trophies at the finish line in Reepham Market Place where runners were met by a cheering crowd.
The race uses just a small section of the 26-mile long Marriott’s Way footpath, bridleway and cycle route. £1 of every runner’s entry fee has been donated to Norfolk Trails who maintain the path so it can be enjoyed for years to come.
This year’s event also saw the first ever Marriott’s Way Children’s Fun Run, sponsored by the Bure Valley Railway. Around 40 children and young people took part in the free, one-mile run, some while wearing their favourite fancy dress outfits. All participants were awarded a Children’s Fun Run medal.
Cllr Claudette Bannock, member champion for sport at Broadland District Council said:
“Every year, the 10k race is popular with runners and spectators and this year has been no different. I’m always impressed with how far people travel to take part,” “It’s been great to see so many young runners take part in the council’s first ever fun run too. Perhaps we’re looking at some 10k race champions of the future.”
Winners of this year’s 10k race were:
Female Open Winner
NAME: Joanne Walmsley
Male Open Winner
NAME: John Scoggins
CLUB: City of Norwich Athletics Club
