Lisa Starr is proof it's never too late to follow your dreams.

Aged 53 and with three grown up children, the former dental practice manager is now running her own successful beauty salon from the comfort of her Sprowston home.

She had a "what am I doing with my life?" moment while stood at the bus stop early one morning in the cold and after 18 months of hard work and dedication, gaining ITEC Diplomas in Beauty Therapy and Holistic Massage, she has never looked back.

"I have always had a passion for beauty but I got married and had children young and I couldn't afford to do it," she said.
"I worked part time in dentistry and life swam me along, but I still knew what I wanted to do. When I talked to my husband he said 'it's now or never'."

Lisa attended Broadland District Council's Business start-up course and has received one-to-one help from the council's business support officer Joanne Kerrison.

"It was so informative and helpful and I made some really good contacts from it," said Lisa.
"I think if you know what you want to do, then just go for it. There are people there to help you like Broadland District Council. The only person stopping you is you."

After qualifying, Lisa worked at a local salon where she gained invaluable on-the-job experience. She then decided to run her own business from home and her husband and brother-in-law converted the garage into a boutique salon.

"I have not once had a time where I've thought 'I shouldn't have done this' and it never crossed my mind it was going to fail - I wouldn't have let it," said Lisa.
"I want to show people that you can retrain at my age and it can be successful."

Stuart Clancy, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development at Broadland District Council, said: "Lisa is a great example of hard work and determination - not letting anything stop her from achieving her business goal.
"Broadland District Council is happy to support people who are thinking of starting their own business in the area, both with training courses and one-to-one support."
