Rubbish and recycling: coronavirus update

recycling waste bin collection

As part of our work to continue running services during this time, we are making some changes to the way your waste is collected.

Putting your bins out

Our general advice is to put your bin out the night before your normal collection day and be prepared to leave it out for longer than usual the next day, as collection times in the district will be staggered, to avoid contact between crews.

Please clean the handles of bins and lids with disinfectant where possible before and after presentation. Residents are also reminded to wash their hands after handling their wheeled bin.

We would like to thank you for your cooperation during this time.

Waste and recycling collections

Some green and grey bins (waste and recycling) will be collected from 6.30am rather than 7am. Others will be collected later in the morning, with collections not starting until 8.30am.

Our advice is please leave your bin out the night before collection and leave it out for longer than you normally would.

Garden waste collections

All collections of garden waste may be up to half an hour later than normal.

New subscriptions for the Garden Waste Collection Service are due to be accepted again from week commencing 11 May.

Bulky waste collections

New orders for the Bulky Waste Service are due to be accepted again from week commencing 11 May.

Food waste collections

All collections of food waste may be up to an hour later than normal.

Allowing access for our vehicles

As more people are working from home, we ask that residents park their vehicles considerately around their home to allow access for the refuse vehicles to collect your bins.

Social distancing rules

For the safety of everyone, please abide by social distancing rules and do not attempt to hand rubbish to the crews or approach the refuse vehicles.

Waste disposal advice

If you have been isolating due to a suspected case of coronavirus it is important that you dispose of your waste differently to help avoid the spread of the virus.

Personal waste (such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths) should be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external household waste bin.

Other household waste can be disposed of as normal.

Waste should be stored safely and kept away from children. If you live in a building with communal waste areas you should store your waste in the way detailed above for at least 72 hours before putting the bags in the communal area.

Bin collections for those who are self-isolating

If you are self-isolating, we ask for your cooperation, if able to, in still putting your bin out for collection at your usual bin collection point as normal during this time.
