Loft and wall insulation

The current building regulation for loft insulation is a minimum depth of 270mm (approx. 10 inches).

For cavity wall insulation, once the wall has been insulated it is not usually necessary to add any more. Work should be guaranteed for 25 years with the Cavity Wall Guarantee Agency (CIGA).

Find an installer

Always use an installer who has signed up to a professional code of practice. A installer should be a member of the National Insulation Association.

Funding

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme obligates large suppliers to deliver energy efficiency measures to domestic premises in Britain. If you’re in receipt of certain benefits and own or privately rent your property, this scheme can provide financial assistance towards energy-saving improvements to your home.

Under this scheme, you can get free or discounted insulation such as loft or cavity wall insulation, and if your boiler is broken a discounted boiler replacement.

ECO Flexible Eligibility Scheme

The Government has now given Local Authorities the ability to identify vulnerable households that could benefit from improvements provided through ECO. This is called Flexible Eligibility.

We have published criteria, in a Statement of Intent, allowing additional households to benefit from the scheme.

To view the criteria, please read the Statement of Intent Version 3.

Previous publications include:

Statement of Intent Version 1, valid from 15 May 2017 to 14 February 2018

Statement of Intent Version 2, 15 February 2018 to 1 April 2019
