Last years winner was Coronation Barn and Cart Lodge, Southwood Hall, Cantley.
Part of a historic complex which also includes Southwood Hall, the large "Coronation Barn" presented a difficult challenge. Conversion to domestic use (the usual fate of redundant farm buildings) would have completely compromised its character and in particular the spectacular single volume internal space. This imaginative scheme to provide a venue for a wide variety of functions, weddings and special events has preserved that interior as a single space, with an extension for kitchens and other services. In the grounds, the former cart lodge has become accommodation for guests. In both buildings, new work is crisply detailed and clearly distinguished from the original historic fabric.
