place survey
Until it was cancelled by the Coalition Government in August 2010, all local authorities in England were required to carry out surveys of a random sample of their adult residents, called the Place Survey. The survey was used to measure people's perceptions of their local area and the local services they receive. The way the surveys were carried out was heavily prescribed by the Department for Communities and Local Government through the Audit Commission, to ensure comparative data across the country.
The results of the surveys helped develop the Council's understanding of public perceptions, both in terms of their local area and in relation to the services provided, and gave a comparison with other parts of the country.
The Place Survey was supposed to be carried out every two years and the first one took place in 2008. Prior to this, satisfaction surveys were carried out every three years under the 'best value' regime.
At the time of the 2008 Place Survey, a similar survey was carried out of young people to obtain their views on those matters covered by the Place Survey that were relevant to younger people.
