Find out if being your own boss is right for you with a free business start-up programme offered by Broadland District Council.

Broadland District Council residents are entitled to attend a free three and a half day business start-up course to find out what is really involved with starting a business.

The programme takes place monthly at the new Broadland Council Training Services training facility at Rackheath, where you can work through your ideas with the Broadland Business Advisor in a fun and informal atmosphere.

first steps towards self-employment

The programme begins with the First Steps Towards Self-Employment half day workshop, to help you begin to answer your questions, including:

  • What skills and experience will I need?
  • How do I know if it will work?
  • Is there any funding available?
  • How do I get started?

You will get to meet other Broadland residents who are in the same position as yourself who are thinking about taking the steps to starting their own business or who have just started. This course will give you a taster as to what elements of business you will be covering in the follow-on three day programme.

The three day Basics 4 Business course will help formulate your business ideas and focus on elements including:

  • Writing the business plan
  • Keeping the business legal
  • Customer Service
  • Sales and Marketing
  • Maintaining financial control
  • Health & Safety
  • Data Protection
  • Employing Staff
  • Legalities
  • Personal development plans
  • Patent/Copyright

follow-on support

Successful candidates who complete the three and a half day start-up programme are entitled to a series of on-going support:

  • A free bolt-on course in Marketing and Sales for your Small Business (to be taken within six months)
  • A free bolt-on course in Financial Management for your Small Business (to be taken within six months)  
  • Delegates can attend a further three free days of training of their choice from the standard BCTS programme (training must be taken within one-year)
  • Candidates are offered on-going support from the Broadland Business Advisor, to offer advice and guidance to help you every step of the way
