The Equality Act 2010 requires us to publish sufficient information to demonstrate our compliance with the general equality duty across all our functions.

Accordingly this page contains all available data, including a record of completed Equality Assessments, which can be requested from the Council.

You will also find summary reports on the Council's workforce and service users that is demanded by the Public Sector Equality Duty. These reports will be updated on an annual basis and will be available from the 6 April 2012.

further information

Equality Assessments originate from the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and the Equality Framework for Local Government (EFLG) both of which place obligations on local authorities and public sector organisations to carry out impact assessments. It involves anticipating the consequences of policies and projects on the following equality strands, making sure that, as far as possible, any negative consequences are eliminated or minimised and opportunities for promoting equality are maximised.

  • Equality strands
    • Age
    • Disability
    • Gender/gender reassignment
    • Race
    • Religion/belief
    • Sexual orientation
  • Additional strands and identified in the recent Equality Duty
    • Marriage and civil partnership
    • Pregnancy and maternity

The benefit of Equality Assessments is not simply achieving legal compliance but using them as a means to best practice to deliver more effective, appropriate and inclusive policies and practices.
